Your starting point
for adventure in Lanquín

Viñas Hotel, the destination to explore Semuc Champey and experience nature intensely.

LANQUIN

Lanquín is a small ancestral treasure of Alta Verapaz. Its name in Q’eqchi’ means “wrapped in straw,” a phrase that perfectly reflects its natural surroundings: lush mountains, crystal-clear rivers, and an atmosphere that feels suspended in time. Founded in 1540, this town has preserved its identity and charm, shaped by living traditions and a deep sense of spirituality.

Its colonial church, built in 1547, is one of the oldest in the region and remains the heart of the community. Every August 15th, Lanquín celebrates the election of the Xko' Qana' Itzam, its Indigenous queen — a symbol of cultural strength and the community’s connection to the land and the mountains.

Lanquín is also home to two extraordinary natural wonders. Semuc Champey, rediscovered in 1954, dazzles with its turquoise pools and impressive natural formation; and the Lanquín Caves, declared a National Park in 1955, hold stories, myths, and ancestral echoes beneath the earth. These gems have turned the municipality into a must-visit destination for travelers seeking adventure, authentic nature, and experiences that feel real.

In recent years, the full paving of the roads toward Pajal and Semuc Champey (2022–2025) has made visiting Lanquín easier and more accessible than ever. Today, this magical corner opens itself to the world with pride, preserving its Q’eqchi’ essence and its unspoiled beauty.

Lanquín is living history, vibrant culture, pure nature, and adventure — a destination that welcomes you with the warmth of its people and the energy of the high Verapaz jungle.
